Seattle Counseling Service Closure

Dear Seattle Counseling Service community,

After 53 years of serving the LGBTQ+ community of Washington State, Seattle Counseling Services is at a crossroads.  Because of financial and operational issues that were exacerbated by the pandemic, the SCS Board of Directors voted to permanently close our doors on May 6th, 2022. [UPDATE: SCS will be closing permanently on June 3rd, 2022]  While we are deeply saddened by this decision, we are heartened by the outpouring of support we have received from the community and are simultaneously working on alternatives that would allow SCS to remain a viable presence for years to come.

Please know that SCS Board and staff are working diligently with King County and other trusted partners to find a solution that will allow us to remain open to new clients and referrals. And as we explore these options, it is imperative that we simultaneously develop a transition plan. Following is some important information in the event of a permanent closure.

  • At this moment we are no longer accepting new clients, and we are working with King County to transition current clients to outside referrals and other community resources around the King County region.
  • If you are a current client of the agency, please know that we will be connecting directly with you in the coming days and weeks in order to facilitate a smooth transfer of care to a new mental health or substance use disorder care provider. Please feel free to discuss this with your current Seattle Counseling Service therapist at your next session, or call/email them in order to speak to them sooner.
  • If your therapist recently left Seattle Counseling Services and you have not yet heard from a new therapist, or you are not sure who your therapist is, rest assured that you have been immediately assigned to a new therapist or peer support specialist, who will be contacting you as soon as possible to help connect you to a new mental health care provider. You are also welcome to call our main phone number at 206-323-1768, and our front desk staff will be able to connect you to your temporary therapist or peer support specialist. If you would like assistance from King County to find a new provider on an ongoing basis, you may also call the King County Client Services line Monday through Friday at 206-263-8997 between the hours 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.
  • If you have been receiving psychiatric medication management services at SCS, our medical nurse will be contacting you about a psychiatric medication care follow-up plan.

As we embark on this journey, we want to express our appreciation for SCS staff, community, volunteers, and board members for an incredible 53 years. It has been a privilege and an honor to serve our community.
